This article is about the specific tools you’ll need to create the magnificent cakes you can charge high prices for.
First, you’ll need an oven. (I understand, it looks like a no-brainer, right?) Nevertheless, you do want to make sure your oven heats evenly–and doesn’t burn in a single corner while undercooking in another. You can utilize your regular oven it it fits the bill. No need to upgrade muffin pan deviled eggs to an expensive commercial grade oven until your cake decorating business really takes off.
Next, a high quality, heavy duty stand mixer. I recommend the KitchenAid 5 Quart Artisan models because of their durability and performance. My grandmother bought another hand one over twenty years ago and used it each day in her cake decorating business.
Spending some money on an excellent quality Turntable is a superb investment. As you grow your organization and obtain into more elaborate cakes, you’ll appreciate the versatility. You can look for ones with motors – or ones that you manually turn. Either way is fine.
Baking Pans have to be the next thing on your list. There are various different pans you’ll need–from small round pans (6″ and up) to large rectangular pans–and everything among. If you are achieving this on a commercial basis, do not buy registered trademark character pans. They may be fine for home birthday parties, but are an infringement on trademark in the event that you try to sell them. You do not need the legal hassles.
Additional necessities include:
– Cooling Racks – Large ones for large project
– Spatulas (certain types are more useful than others)
– Piping Bags
– Tips for creating borders, petals, leaves, etc.
– A good quality camera for future marketing of one’s cake decorating business
I explain each one of these in more detail in my own book.
These basic tools are certain to get you started. As your confidence and skills grow, you may find a need for more specialized equipment. But this will get you started!
